「もし〜なら」を表現するとき、いつも If… だけで始めていませんか？
実は、ネイティブスピーカーやビジネスの現場では、Ifを使わない「仮定法」が驚くほど頻繁に使われています。例えば、感謝を伝えるときの「Without your help（あなたの助けがなければ）」や、警告を促すときの「Otherwise（さもないと）」などです。
これらを使いこなせると、文法的に正確になるだけでなく、こなれた大人の英語表現へと一気にステップアップできます。

1. 「〜がなければ」Without / But for / If not for 系
1-1 Without：最もよく使う中立的な形
Without は前置詞で「…なしに」という意味ですが、仮定法の文脈では「もし…がなかったら」という反事実的な条件を表現します。
基本構造
【現在・一般的な状況について】
Without + 名詞, 主語 + would / could / might + 動詞の原形
【過去について】
Without + 名詞, 主語 + would / could / might + have + 過去分詞
例文：現在の状況
例文1-1：日常生活
Without your help, I couldn’t do this job.
（あなたの助けがなかったら、この仕事はできません。）
Without coffee in the morning, I can’t function.
（朝のコーヒーがないと、まともに動けません。）
Without my team, I wouldn’t be able to handle all these projects.
（チームがいなかったら、こんなに多くのプロジェクトは回せません。）
実務的な活用場面 会議でのプレゼンテーション、チーム評価、感謝のメッセージなど、「ある要素がいかに重要であるか」を強調する場面で自然に使われます。
例文1-2：職場での感謝
Without your feedback, the presentation wouldn’t have gone so well.
（あなたのフィードバックがなかったら、あのプレゼンはあんなにうまくいかなかったでしょう。）
実務的解説 相手の貢献を具体的に認めながら、その価値を客観的に述べられます。
例文1-3：新人育成
Without proper guidance from the manager, junior staff would struggle to handle complex clients.
（マネージャーからの適切なガイダンスなしに、ジュニアスタッフは複雑なクライアント対応に苦労するだろう。）
例文：過去の出来事
例文1-4：キャリア形成
Without her support, I couldn’t have got through last year.
（彼女の支えがなかったら、去年を乗り切れなかったと思います。）
時制に注意 過去の出来事なので、「would have + 過去分詞」を使用。

Without your support, I wouldn’t have been able to complete my MBA while working full-time.
（あなたのサポートなしに、働きながらMBAを修了することはできなかっただろう。）
1-2 Without の後に来る形
Without の後には、以下のような要素が来ます：
1. 名詞
Without money, I couldn’t survive.
（お金がなかったら、生き延びることはできません。）
2. 名詞句
Without my laptop, I can’t work effectively.
（私のラップトップがなかったら、効果的に働くことはできません。）
3. 動名詞（-ing形）
We shouldn’t proceed without hearing everyone’s opinions.
（誰もの意見を聞くことなしに、決定を進めるべきではない。）
The software couldn’t be deployed without passing security tests.
（テストに合格しなければ、デプロイはできないだろうに[実際は合格したからできた/今テスト中である]）
重要な注意 Without の後には「S + V」の形は来ません。
誤：Without you go to the party, it would be boring.（❌）
正：Without you at the party, it would be boring.（✓）
正：If you didn’t go to the party, it would be boring.（✓）
1-3 But for：ややフォーマル・書き言葉寄り
But for も without と同じく「〜がなかったら」という意味ですが、より硬い・文語的な響きがあります。
But for + 名詞, 主語 + would / could / might …
But for your advice, I might have made a serious mistake.
（あなたのアドバイスがなかったら、重大なミスをしていたかもしれません。）
But for the rain, we would have had a great picnic.
（雨さえ降らなければ、楽しいピクニックになっていたのに。）
But for my parents, I wouldn’t be where I am now.
（両親がいなければ、今の私はいません。）

1-4 If not for：会話でも使いやすい「もし～がなかったら」
If not for は if を含みますが、if 節が「名詞句だけ」という点で、if節のない仮定表現に近いグループとしてまとめます。
If not for + 名詞, 主語 + would / could / might …
If not for you, I would have given up a long time ago.
（あなたがいなかったら、とっくに諦めていました。）
If not for this job, I probably wouldn’t be living in Tokyo.
（この仕事がなければ、おそらく東京には住んでいないでしょう。）
If not for my wife, I wouldn’t eat anything healthy.
（妻がいなかったら、健康的なものは何も食べていないと思う。）
特徴 「もし～がなければ」という意味にストレートに気づけるので、without よりも感情がこもりやすい印象があります。
1-5 If it weren’t for / If it hadn’t been for：形がしっかりした仮定法
こちらは it + be が入った、より文法的に「仮定法らしい形」です。
【現在の仮定】
If it weren’t for ～, 主語 + would / could / might + 動詞原形
【過去の仮定】
If it hadn’t been for ～, 主語 + would / could / might + have + p.p.
例文：現在
If it weren’t for my kids, I‘d probably work late every night.
（子どもたちがいなかったら、毎晩遅くまで働いていると思う。）
If it weren’t for online meetings, our job would be much harder.
（オンライン会議がなかったら、仕事はもっと大変でしょう。）
例文：過去
If it hadn’t been for your reminder, I would have forgotten the meeting.
（あなたのリマインダーがなかったら、会議を忘れていたと思います。）
If it hadn’t been for my boss’s support, I couldn’t have handled that client.
（上司のサポートがなかったら、あのクライアントには対応できませんでした。）

2. 「さもないと〜だ」Otherwise / Or else / Or
2-1 Otherwise：文書でも会話でも頻出
Otherwise は「そうでなければ」「さもないと」という意味で、前の文を条件として受ける役割をします。
現在の状況について：
You should leave now, otherwise you‘ll miss the last train.
（そろそろ出たほうがいいよ。じゃないと終電を逃すよ。）
ビジネス文書：
We need to confirm this with the client; otherwise, it might cause trouble later.
（この件はクライアントに確認しておく必要があります。そうしないと、後でトラブルになりかねません。）
指示・警告：
Please save your work regularly; otherwise, you may lose your data.
（こまめに保存してください。そうしないとデータを失うかもしれません。）
フォーマル度の使い分け
- 書き言葉：セミコロン「; otherwise, …」で接続
- 話し言葉：カンマ「… , otherwise …」で接続
2-2 Or else / Or：カジュアルな「〜しないと…」
Or と Or else を使っても、同じ「さもないと」の意味が出ます。
Hurry up, or we‘ll be late for the meeting.
（急がないと、会議に遅れるよ。）
You’d better reply today, or else she might think you’re ignoring her.
（今日中に返事したほうがいいよ。じゃないと、無視していると思われるかも。）
Finish your part by Friday, or we can’t send the report on time.
（金曜までにあなたのパートを終わらせてね。そうしないと、レポートを期限内に送れない。）
トーン ：or else は 少し強め・カジュアル寄りなので、上司に使うとやや厳しく聞こえます。職場では or / otherwise の方が無難です。
3. 条件を含む名詞句・前置詞句で言う仮定
If 節を使わず、名詞句や前置詞句の中に条件の意味を埋め込むパターンも、上級レベルでは重要です。
3-1 With / Without + 名詞：「〜があれば／〜がなければ」
With your experience, you should have no problem handling this project.
（あなたの経験があれば、このプロジェクトは問題なくこなせるはずです。）
With a bit more time, we could make this report much better.
（もう少し時間があれば、このレポートはもっと良くできます。）
With better communication, this misunderstanding wouldn’t have happened.
（もっとコミュニケーションが良ければ、この誤解は起きなかったでしょう。）
役割の違い
- With = 「〜があれば」という仮定の条件（肯定的）
- Without = 「〜がなければ」という仮定の条件（否定的）
3-2 In case of / In the event of：「〜の場合には」
これ自体は「〜の場合には」という直説法の条件ですが、「起こるかもしれない未来」を想定する点で、条件を表す表現の仲間の仲間として位置づけられます。
In case of an emergency, call this number.
（緊急時には、この番号に電話してください。）
In the event of a delay, we’ll contact you by email.
（遅延が発生した場合は、メールでご連絡します。）
注意： In case of / In the event ofは、「フォーマルな案内・社内文書などでよく使われる条件表現」として理解してください。
3-3 Given / Considering：「〜を考えると（＝もし〜ならば）」
Given と Considering は「〜という条件・前提を考えると」という意味で、内容的には if ～ の変形です。
Given the tight schedule, we might need to work this weekend.
（この厳しいスケジュールを考えると、今週末は働かなければならないかもしれません。）
Given his experience, it’s no surprise that he got promoted.
（彼の経験からすれば、昇進したのも当然です。）
Considering the situation, I think we handled it well.
（状況を考えると、私たちはうまく対応したほうだと思います。）
学習のコツ 「if we consider ～」→「considering ～」という変換をイメージするとより理解しやすくなります。
- If we consider his performance, we should give him a raise.

（彼のパフォーマンスを考えると、給与を上げるべきです。）
